Steve Reich’s Drumming: A Group Hallucination

This is a group hallucination and you’re invited.
We give you the classical icon Steve Reich‘s minimalist masterpiece “Drumming”. As if this wasn’t enough, we add the gravity-defying ecstasy of House of Yes. The outcome is group synesthesia. Through the use of video projections, dance, and aerial, guests will find themselves inside of the phases and experience themselves out of body.

House of Yes’ brilliant aerialists will be joined by Katherine Crockett and Lisa Natoli.
Also on the program: Steve Reich’s gorgeous “Electric Counterpoint” performed by Daniel Lippel, guitar, Francoise Voranger, and Zoob Fernandez.

Curated by :: Daisy PressJustin AhiyonAnya Sapozhnikova
Performed by :: Sandbox Percussion and House of Yes company dancers and aerialists.
For those yet uninitiated…
Stephen Michael “Steve” Reich is an American composer who, along with La Monte YoungTerry Riley, and Philip Glass, pioneered minimal music in the mid to late 1960s.
Reich’s style of composition influenced many composers and groups. His innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns and the use of simple, audible processes to explore musical concepts (for instance, Pendulum Music and Four Organs). These compositions, marked by their use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm and canons, have significantly influenced contemporary music, especially in the US. Reich’s work took on a darker character in the 1980s
Reich is one of “a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and he may…be considered, by general acclamation, America’s greatest living composer.
Drumming was composed for a nine-piece percussion ensemble with female voices and piccolo. Drumming marked the beginning of a new stage in his career.

NYC Workshops May 2017

Lisa Natoli returns to the Warehouse in May with two typically thought-provoking aerial workshops you won’t want to miss.

Tuesday May 9, 11-1: Evoke, Provoke, Suggest (Fabric theory and Partnering)
This class is for the curious aerialist with some experience who want to broaden boundaries and identify habits, assumptions and expectations in their artistic practice. We will work collaboratively towards creating a coherent, thinking body by building awareness using techniques and skills collected through research and experience. We will integrate transitions and skills into sequences to become better technicians and performing artists, being mindful of the question, “What are we choosing/drawing on and why?”
Pre-req: Be able to invert in air repeatedly, execute a clean hip key and know two ways to get into an S-wrap.
We ask that you come with an open mind and available body and one skill or idea that you would like to build into a collective sequence.

Friday May 12, 3-5: Reinventing The Apparatus (vertical apparatus)
This class is geared towards aerialists who wants to explore how things work. We will deconstruct wraps and design ways of using landmarks as jumping-off points to explore points of entry and exit. We will also examine how skills and theories interact and transfer between the apparatus and body.
Pre-req: Working knowledge of S-wrap and Hip Key. Be able to invert in the air repeatedly.
PRICE: $75 drop in (No class cards)
LENGTH OF WKSPS: 2 hours each
