\nSteve Reich’s Drumming: A Group Hallucination

\nThis is a group hallucination and you’re invited.
\nWe give you the classical icon\u00a0Steve Reich<\/a>‘s minimalist masterpiece “Drumming”. As if this wasn’t enough, we add the gravity-defying ecstasy of House of Yes. The outcome is group synesthesia. Through the use of video projections, dance, and aerial, guests will find themselves inside of the phases and experience themselves out of body.<\/p>\n

House of Yes’ brilliant aerialists will be joined by Katherine Crockett and Lisa Natoli.
\nAlso on the program: Steve Reich’s gorgeous “Electric Counterpoint” performed by Daniel Lippel, guitar, Francoise Voranger, and Zoob Fernandez.<\/p>\n

\nFor those yet uninitiated…
\nStephen Michael “Steve” Reich is an American composer who, along with\u00a0La Monte Young<\/a>,\u00a0Terry Riley<\/a>, and\u00a0Philip Glass<\/a>, pioneered minimal music in the mid to late 1960s.
\nReich’s style of composition influenced many composers and groups. His innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns and the use of simple, audible processes to explore musical concepts (for instance, Pendulum Music and Four Organs). These compositions, marked by their use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm and canons, have significantly influenced contemporary music, especially in the US. Reich’s work took on a darker character in the 1980s
\nReich is one of “a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and he may…be considered, by general acclamation, America’s greatest living composer.
\nDrumming was composed for a nine-piece percussion ensemble with female voices and piccolo. Drumming marked the beginning of a new stage in his career.<\/p>\n
